Frequently Asked Questions

How does Extras Ireland work?
Extras Ireland is a casting agency which provides talent for television, film, events, photoshoots and various other kinds of projects all over Ireland. Production companies get in touch with us looking for talent for a specific job, we send them our suggestions of who might fit the bill, they make their selections and we book the extra/actor/model for the job.

What is an extra?
An extra is also known as a background artist. Extras are used in film and television, music videos etc to make the scene seem more real. They do not have a main role in the story but are very much part of the action.

Do I need to have acting experience to sign up?
No, you don’t need to have any experience. However, certainly let us know if you have any as we often provide featured or special extras who have a couple of lines of dialogue or are a more central part of the scene. We also provide professional actors for larger roles.

Do you accept children on the Extras Ireland database?
Yes, absolutely. There is lots of work out there for under 18s from newborns to teens. However, everyone under 18 must have permission from a parent/guardian to register with us.

Do I have to pay anything to register as an extra/actor/model with Extras Ireland?
No, it is 100% free to sign up with us. If we secure some work for you, we will then take a commission from the fee you are paid for the job.

Will my photo and personal information be put up on the internet?
No, your personal information will be kept by us here at Extras Ireland. We communicate exclusively internally with production companies. We do not have a database that is searchable online.

How much money will I get paid for a job?
This really depends on the job and how long you are out working for. Fees can vary from €50 for a couple of hours’ work to several thousands of euro for working on a television commercial.

Do I need to be fully available to sign up?
No, most of our people are either studying or have another form of employment.

How will I be booked for a job?
A production company will get in touch with us looking for extras/actors/models for a project. We will send them suggestions of who might be suitable. They will have a browse and send us a shortlist of who they are interested in. If you are shortlisted, we will send you an availability check via text or email to find out if you would be available if selected. We tell the production company who is available and interested and they will decide who they would like to book. We then book their choices for the job.

How much notice will I get about a job?
This depends on the project. It varies depending on how urgently a production company needs extras/actors/models for their project. You might be asked a week in advance or the day before. In the event that someone has to pull out last minute, we might be needing you immediately!

If I receive an availability check and say that I am free, does this mean I will be booked?
An availability check is just that – we are checking to see if you would be available for a job if you are selected. It is not an offer of work. If you respond to us saying that you are available, this does not guarantee that you will be chosen.

How much work will I get?
It’s impossible to predict how much work anyone who signs up with us will be booked for. It depends on what the client is looking for, your suitability for their project and your availability. We cannot guarantee that you will secure work with us but we will always put you forward for jobs you are suitable for.

If I am not available for a job, will this go against me in the future?
No, definitely not. We are always looking for the right people for each project so we will certainly suggest you for other jobs that you are suitable for. You are not obliged to accept work that we offer you if you are not available.

How will I be paid for the work that I do?
After you complete the job, we will be in touch via email to organise payment. All of our payments go through Revenue so you must have a PPS number to work with us. We will transfer your fee directly into your bank account, usually within 4-6 weeks of the date you worked. It is then up to you to arrange your own tax.

Will I be provided with a costume for the shoot?
This depends on the job. Sometimes costume will be provided, sometimes you will be asked to bring your own.

Will transport be provided to get me to and from the shoot?
This depends on the job. Sometimes transport will be provided and sometimes you will have to make your own way there.

Will I be fed on set?
Again, this depends on the job. Sometimes food will be provided for you and sometimes you will need to provide your own.

How long are days on sets?
Depending on the job, you might be on set for 30 minutes or for a very long day of upwards of 10 hours.

What will I be asked to do as an extra?
This really depends on the scene – you might be asked to pretend to have a chat with someone, to pretend to buy something in a shop, walk down a street, run away from something or be part of a huge crowd of people. The possibilities are endless. Every day is always different which is what makes being an extra so exciting!
